Hello and welcome to the Algerian Youth Leadership Program 2013. You have either recently arrived in San Francisco from Algeria and getting ready to take a bus to Reno or you’ve left your home in Nevada to come to the University of Nevada. Regardless, here’s a few things you should know about your home for the next several days. Regarded as “The Biggest Little City in the World” and praised for its culture and beauty, Reno Nevada continues to exceed expectations from travelers near and far.
We’re located at the base of the Sierra Nevada and built on the majestic Truckee River, Reno was once famed for its wild west appeal and mid century divorce laws. Although Reno is often sought after as Las Vegas’ little brother, the real allure is found in the vibrant cultural community.
Boasting a population of 400,000, including the intimate University of Nevada, Reno campus, where you’ll spend a lot of your time, an array of activities steeped in culture keep this small city on the arts and entertainment map. Ranging from the numerous concerts and theatre performances at UNR, to the city’s own opera, ballet and multiple theatre companies, there is never a shortage of entertainment for guests and locals alike.
Reno’s thriving culture and community can only be rivaled by the cities geographical location. Drawing visitors in from near and far, Reno is neighbor to the picturesque Lake Tahoe. At 6,229 ft. elevation, Lake Tahoe’s pristine waters mimic the bright blue sky, while the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountain range is a world class destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Home to several notable ski and snowboard resorts including Squaw Valley USA, and revered for it’s smooth white sand beaches and award winning golf courses, Lake Tahoe is an enviable destination throughout all seasons.
Although the city itself offers a bounty of adventure and entertainment, Reno’s location also makes for easy travel to both Sacramento, Calif. and San Francisco, Calif. Within four hours or less, travelers have access to over one dozen ski resorts, thousands of hiking trails, numerous golf courses, the Truckee River filled with fish ready for catching and several famous cities.
For students in Reno, all of these exciting features make for an unforgettable learning environment. Pair an esteemed education with an abundance of healthy activities and students have the ideal educational experience.
We welcome you to Nevada and the University of Nevada, Reno. This is Nevada!
